Most ACL rehab stops too early.

The research is clear: re-injury rates dramatically increase when athletes return to sport before they're physically ready. Pain going away is not the same as being recovered. You need objective testing, progressive loading, and a structured return-to-sport protocol.

Each phase has clear criteria that need to be met before moving forward. Progress is based on what your body can actually do, not how much time has passed.

A structured 4-phase journey back to sport.

Each phase has clear milestones and criteria that must be achieved before progressing.

1
Phase One
Protect & Restore
Month 0–2

Manage swelling, restore range of motion, and wake up the quad. This phase is focused on calming things down and building a foundation for the following phase.

  • Reduce pain and swelling
  • Restore knee range of motion
  • Build early lower limb strength
  • Improve daily function
  • Maintain overall fitness
2
Phase Two
Rebuild Strength
Month 2–4

Progressive loading of the quad, hamstrings, glutes, and calf. Strength is a major focus in this portion of rehab where many traditional strength exercises are introduced.

  • Increase muscle strength and hypertrophy
  • Improve movement quality
  • Progress overall fitness
3
Phase Three
Power & Agility
Month 4–6+

Plyometrics, running and force production. This phase bridges strength work and the real demands of your sport.

  • Introduce running and plyometrics
  • Achieve >80% limb symmetry
  • Restore full knee flexion and extension
  • Minimal activity-related swelling
4
Phase Four
Return to Sport
Month 6+

Sprinting, change of direction and deceleration are progressively reintroduced. This phase ends with a full return to sport and performance.

  • Return to sprinting
  • Develop change of direction ability
  • Improve deceleration capacity
  • Return to training, sport, and performance

Built Around You

Your program is built around your body, your timeline, and your goals, not a one-size-fits-all protocol. Every phase is tailored to where you are and what you're working towards.

Criteria-Based Progression

You don't move to the next phase until you meet the criteria. This protects the graft, reduces re-injury risk, and means your body is genuinely ready.

Return-to-Sport is the Goal

We don't stop at pain-free. We build you back to full sport capacity, with objective testing, sport drills, and a formal return-to-sport process.

Common questions answered.

No. We work with both surgical and conservative (non-operative) ACL management pathways. Your intake form captures your specific situation and your program is built accordingly.
You can begin the program at any point, whether you are preparing for surgery, in the early stages of recovery, or further along in your rehabilitation. There is no set starting point. We conduct a thorough initial assessment to understand where you are, and build your program accordingly.
ACL rehab does not follow a fixed timeframe. Full return to competitive sport can take anywhere from 6 to 24 months depending on the individual, and rushing the process is one of the biggest risk factors for re-injury. Our program is built around objective criteria, not calendar time, so progression is based on your body's response, not a set number of weeks.
At minimum, a resistance band, a step, and access to a gym with basic equipment from Phase 2 onward. Your program is designed around what you have available.
Face-to-face appointments are held at 12/35 Coonara Avenue, West Pennant Hills NSW 2125. We are located at the top of the stairs in the complex.
